When Telling My Mom About You

Madness, I keep trying to compare your arrival

to something, but nothing is right—

the overripening of oranges—

the endless dribble of water—

I’m going crazy. I told her about how

you have this huge crush on me

and it’s almost kinda embarrassing

for you. Following me around

all night asking to put your tongue

in my tongue. Can you stop

being so frickin’ psycho? Like, literally,

stop, I’m sooo serious. Like don’t.

Haha, you know I’m kidding.

I love you. How was your day, babe?

My professor said my discussion post

was smart. My students used many words.

The traffic lights lined up. You followed me

to bed. Ok, I was the one who followed you.

I'll be brave enough to say it. To take my shirt off

and press into you. To not cry when you dissipate

in the morning, when I get an office job

and a prescription and you stop hanging around.

Hey, how have you been? The hydrangeas

are coming in beautifully this year.

Did you know that sometimes I still

get very sad? Not to double text but

I miss you already hope

you are well would love

to see you soon
