Vocabulary

Today, our daughter learned the word

homeostasis and all the other

synonyms of physiological sameness—

A steady palm and a treat, the dog

knows to stay. Even when I round

the corner, I imagine movement

only in his eyes as he waits for the OK.

We have been stable—now in our

longest duty station, we still don’t

call this home. When will we be going

home? and we mean visiting parents.

Then, we also talk of what we refer

to as our forever home. Our daughter

wants land for chickens and a pony.

Well, we’ll see. I collect bubble wrap

and tissue paper for a move three years

from now. This place when be a decade

of our daughter’s past by then.
